Know the Properties of Viral Content
What is Viral Content? The primary reason a subject requires content is for the end result that the content can provide. Any catchy content is viral.
Meet Mr. Kamalakannan, film maker to understand things needed to become a filmmaker
I, Karthi Easwaramoorthy, did sit with the fast growing and very talented filmmaker and director, Mr. Kamalakannan, who directed critically acclaimed “Madhupanakadai” and another film produced by Dream warriors having Sibi Sathyraj and Andrea in lead roles to be released soon for a conversation. We did have our conversation early morning from 7AM to 9AM as he was busy with his work and travel. Learned a lot about film making. I am sure it would interest you also. Here you go. Personal life of Mr. Kamalakannan Kamalakannan, director of the Tamil film, “Madhubana Kadai”, was born in Erode, whose parents were Government workers. But until he was four, he grew up in his grandparents’ house in a village. From his childhood, he learnt and wondered about the cultural differences between his parents’ house and the village he lived – city versus village. Until his 12th grade he studied in Erode. For his undergraduate degree, he went to Vasavi College, Erode where he did his Bachelors in Science in Chemistry. But eventually he learnt that this was not his cup of tea and discontinued after a year. He said, “I couldn’t bring myself to learn about Chemistry or stay amidst the chemicals or adjust with labs and science”. That’s when he decided to take up a degree in VISCOM. When asked on how the roots of filmmaking was sown into him, he dated back to 1960s, when his grandfather and uncle owned theatres. He said, “I knew to operate pictures in theatres when I was young. Most often, my neighbours would take me to watch films even if they weren’t my family. I used to watch at least five films every week. In fact, my brother and I used to have our own little game with the satellite channels in our TV, where we’d change channels randomly, and when it stops, we’d be able to tell the name of the film”. With the seeds of cinema being sown by his grandfather and uncle, his parents also played a major part in this. They were people with lots of creativity, both of them being intellects in Tamil literature. But to be specific, Kamalakannan decided to become a filmmaker in his 11th grade. He gained interest after watching the films, “Hey Ram” and “Mudhalvan”. After discontinuing from Vasavi College, he studied BSc. VISCOM in Hindustan College, Coimbatore. He said, “VISCOM is not a creative course. It is a basic course where we learn about visuals and audio from scratch. It gives us more time, than others, to read, travel and learn more about things in life. In the end cinema is more about experiences, isn’t it?”. After this he worked in a film with Mr. Seenu Ramasamy in Chennai for about a year. Unfortunately, this year was the one that made him lose hope in cinema and filmmaking, and without a second thought, he left to Coimbatore. To learn more, or say change perspectives, he joined Hindustan College, Coimbatore for his degree in Mass Communication. In the forenoon, he’d study and, in the afternoon and evenings, he would work for radio advertisements and marriage videography. In a while, the idea of starting a film society in Coimbatore struck him. He said, “The one year I spent in Chennai, I learnt about film clubs and other global cinema film societies. This made me wonder about starting a film society in Coimbatore. Eventually, with a group of boys from Mass Communication Department, I started a film society in Coimbatore, where students can watch films from around the world, and discuss about them”. After some years, he also started a company called “Montage” through which he made advertisements and videography. This phase let him learn about the advanced technologies involved in filmmaking. With this interest and knowledge, he made the Tamil film “Madhubana Kadai” with just a DSLR camera and lens. He said “We made the film and expected it to run good, but didn’t expect the fame and respect we got for it. It was surprising and overwhelming for the whole team”. Mr. Kamalakannan’s Take on Filmmaking “The art of filmmaking involves team spirit” said Mr. Kamalakannan. He also added, “It involves a lot of people, and the opportunity to meet them comes when we enter institutes. These institutes provide a large ground for networking. He feels that art is all about individuality. The basics to filmmaking, according to him, are reading books and traveling and interacting with different types of people to understand the different perspectives of life, culture and thoughts. He feels money is just one of the many things required in filmmaking. He said, “More than money, trust is what is important in filmmaking. If I tell someone a story and they like it, they might come forward to help me in any way they can, and not just financially”. This seems to be true after what he said about the process involved behind his film “Madhubana Kadai”. While his core team members were only ten, he had about a hundred people helping him with his film. It has surely happened only with the trust of all the hundred people and many more. Importance of Reading in Filmmaking Kamalakannan implied that it is important that creators of art read books of different genre. It helps build a wide range of ideas as a base for their art – be it any form. He said, “Poetry paves way to creativity and stories to logics. One should be able to connect ideas easily. For example, if I tell someone 70 scenes of a film, I must have known 1000 scenes already. If I speak of 20 characters, I must have had 200 characters already in the process”. According to him, a political standpoint is always present for a filmmaker, in bits and pieces or as a major idea, and it must be put into questioning often. In his experience, books have always given a standpoint for the creation of his art. This standpoint
Meet MR. Ravi Pratap Singh Who studied zoology and went on to build an E-learning company
Ravi Pratap Singh, the Co-founder of Learnnovators, a leading eLearning company, shared some beautiful and motivating insights of his entrepreneurial journey and how his company went on to bag 60+ awards across the globe for their innovative elearning solutions. I, Karthi Easwaramoorthy, sat with him for an hour one fine evening to have a casual conversation with him. My takeaway from that conversation was that nothing happens overnight. EARLY LIFE AND STARTING OF HIS CAREER When I asked him about his roots, native, school and college life, how he got into entrepreneurship and his opinions on marketing and innovation, I was astonished by his answers. After school, just to escape from the clutches of Maths (and because of his love for animals), Ravi took up zoology at Loyola College, Chennai. After graduation, he completed a diploma in IT and took up a 3-month internship as a programmer. But he quickly realized that programming was not his cup of tea and decided not to spend the rest of coding, His first job entailed door-to-door selling of the world’s leading home computer brand. “Life is strange, I never thought I would sell home computers someday.” he remarked. Following this stint, he moved on to be a part of the franchising teams of two of India’s largest IT training companies. From being responsible for channel development in the state of Tamil Nadu, he rose rapidly in his career to handle franchising of IT training centers across nearly 20 states in South, East and North East India before finally heading international business where he set up and managed training businesses in 30+ countries across South Asia, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. His actions in the initial phase of his career were not planned. He went with the flow and always had the urge to learn something new. ‘The urge to learn more and more’ is a quality everyone must have because life is all about connecting experiences with opportunities. BEGINNING OF THE ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY In 2003, Ravi decided to take the entrepreneurial plunge along with three ex-colleagues and set up Learnnovators (then known as C2 Workshop), a company specializing in the design and development of custom e-learning solutions for the workplace. Seventeen years and several challenges later (which includes two of the original co-founders quitting the company), Ravi and Vidya have built Learnnovators to become one of the most trusted (and awarded) global brands in the e-learning business. HOW TO MANAGE A BUSINESS? Here are some of Ravi’s favourite mantras for business success. 1. “Building a committed and passionate team is key to a successful business.” 2. “Always strive to add value to all your stakeholders – employees, customers, partners, and vendors.” 3. “Like life, business is all about good and bad days. It’s not about how many times you get knocked down that count, but how many times you can get back up and how soon!” 4. “Don’t let success get to your head and failure to your heart.” 5. “When you are open to learning, your life will always be interesting and exciting.” All the best for all his future endeavours. Don’t make biryani without salt
There are times when we think and think and think to the maximum of our brain’s capacity. That’s right, we sometimes exhaust our brain by thinking too much while trying to make decisions in life. As the famous Buddhist saying goes” be like an empty cup, free from all confusions and thoughts. Only then you will give way to new beginnings”. We must spare our mind the burden of overthinking. Overthinking is just as same as being in a comfort zone. It is a place where you can stay forever but it will not let you go anywhere. It makes you like Dormamu and Dr.Strange, stuck in an eternal loop of thinking. I was once a victim of overthinking too. It made me get stuck for weeks thinking through a decision I had to make. But unlike everyone I had a little help. It was my grandma, the angel who lighted up my path which I follow even today. It was such an eye-opening revelation that has been helping me in every situation. So, I decided to share it with you too. I was 23 years old when my grandma taught me the concept of “Don’t Think”. I was struggling to make the most important decision of my life. I couldn’t make any progress because of the situation as I was too involved in trying to figure out what to do. My grandma who was living adjacent to my house decided to pay a visit. She saw me in a state of chaos, so she decided to step up and make the decision on my behalf. Within just two minutes she came to a conclusion and made her decision which I was struggling with for almost two weeks. I was amazed how quick she solved such a complex process. When I asked her, she said it was a simple tool called “Don’t Think”. Educated people complicate things so much thinking we know a lot. As a result, we forget that even complex problems have simple solutions. My grandma was a package of brilliance covered by a village breeze. Not only my grandma but I was born and raised as a villager too. We forget that our villages have a simple cure to even the deadliest diseases in the world. And their lifestyle and thinking gives us the key to unlock great achievements. One such key was given to me by my grandma which is “Don’t Think”. From that day onwards every decision I made was successful. It helped me start a non-profit organisation named IndiaTeam.org along with my friends. Second, I started the community radio at Stanford called Saaral in the year 2003. I worked and lived in US for 15 years as a software engineer. Then too I had to make the difficult decision of returning to India. However, I still had the key my grandma gave me when I was 23 so I came back to India and commenced TICKETGOOSE.COM which quickly crossed to do a 100 core GMV in the year 2007. And then a series of events like setting up a Digital Village and becoming a public speaker to writing y own book my grandma’s advice was a golden key which opened many successful doors in my life. The life of a villager can be divided into three CleanBuildDo Clean: Cleanliness is not just for the body but also for our inner selves. It doesn’t require you to travel to meditation centres all it takes is a little gratitude for oneself and the nature around. Wake up early so that you accompany the sun while it rises. In that way you rise along with the star. Go out for a walk and inhale the fresh air which is a gift not many of us work to receive. Observe the music of the new day and how nature thanks for another beginning by her song through birds and trees. You can also add your own music to it like our villagers who sing while working. Having done these you are 60% villager now. The circle: Eat and burn more, read and write more, share and help more. Whatever we say about people it all comes down to one planet one home and one family. The world is nothing but a giant ball floating in space and we are living on it. Isn’t that enough to make us one big family? There is always someone in need of your help. Like John Masefield’s poem goes “Laugh and be merry together, like brothers akin,Guesting awhile in the rooms of a beautiful inn,Glad till the dancing stops, and the lilt of the music ends.” We are all temporary stayers in a beautiful place. Celebrate it like a new-born and enjoy it like a poem. I DO! Knowledge and talent without action is like biryani without salt. So, get up and do what you wanted to do. Practise if you think you require more skill and don’t forget to think like a villager. That’s how we have Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Karthi Easwaramoorthy. Let’s all practise “Don’t Think! Be a Villager!” Let us start our journey together to understand the life of a villager! Learn the habits of a villager! Experience the life of our villages. Thank you for the journey with me
